Nikon D40 or D60?

I decided to go with the Nikon, after checking out the Canon Rebel and the Nikon. but someone suggested against the D40 because of the autofocus I think it was. I checked a website that someone here recommended and I am not sure which camera to get. The D40 comes with the kit lense and another. The D60 comes with with kit lense but the megapixals goes up dramatically.

Which camera should I get??? D40 or D60?

I bought the D80 and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! But had my budget been a little lower I would have bought the D40. My friend has it and says it is wonderful. Most kit lenses suck though so if I were you I'd look online to buy the body only and just buy lenses seperately. My Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens was very reasonable! I paid $117.90 shipped got it from B&H. I got my Sigma 18-200mm from Sigma4less.com and paid $239.37. And because i bought the D80 body only I saved at least $300 so IMO my lenses were free and they are way better than the kit lens would have been

I have the D40 and love it. I just looked today to see what Ken Rockwell thought of the D60 vs. the D40, and the D40 still is his favorite. Megapixels don't really mean anything unless you are blowing up to 20" x 30" I learned when I was researching DSLRs. I thought the higher the MP number the better, but I learned that's not true, but most consumers think that due to the marketing by the camera companies.

Just remember that ( i think) it requires special lenses with the motor in the lens. (i would imagine most newer lenses has this feature but you may want to check)

One of the reasons I went with the D50 was the problem with needing special lenses with the D40. So I bought a refurbished D50 since they are now discontinued. If I had waited a few more months I would have gotten the D60 new. I didn't know it was coming out this spring. The D80 is still out of my price range.

I got the 60 after several recommendations. The mega pixels do go up dramatically but I appreciate a HIGH mega pixel. I haven't had an opportunity to use it yet, except in the store, but I will say that in the store it held it's own against the D80 (I've heard this one is going to the clearance rack). The 40 was not really an option for me so I'm unsure as to what it's specific specs are....
