Does anyone own/familiar with the Canon 40D? Empty Does anyone own/familiar with the Canon 40D?

So here's my sad/annoying story: I bought the 40D (upgrading from the 20D) from B&H at the end of July and after just a couple days I noticed it was defective (like it didn't show all the numbers in the viewfinder) and some other little things. So I emailed B&H and they said, absolutely, they'd take it back and give me a new one, no charge to me (not even the shipping). It was AMAZING--i had my new 40D in 3 days! So far so good, right? Well, now I have a problem with my 2nd 40D, but it took me longer to notice it b/c for a while I thought it just must be me, but now i'm convinced it's not. Basically the exposure is way off--i shoot entirely in manual mode, so I know how to adjust for this and I can't seem to make it work--all the shadows come out very dark and nearly all the highlights are blown, so the photos are all super contrasty. OR the photos are kind of flat and foggy (not out of focus foggy, just as if there were a stream of light passing thru the lens--like lens glare). I've tried putting it in fully automatic mode (normally i do this when i let my husband use it) and in this mode every photo comes out either extremely overexposed or extremely underexposed. I have a Sekonic light meter and even when I use this, the photos come out WAY under or over exposed. What is up?? So I emailed B&H and said that I know their return policy is only 15 days but this is a problem that takes longer than 15 days to diagnose. They're sticking by that and told me to call the warranty people (it comes with a year warranty). I assume they'll either fix or replace it, but should I even bother with a new one? Does anyone else have this camera and like it? At this point, I feel like those amateur point-and-shoot cameras take WAY better pics than mine!!! I'm even considering getting one (so i can hand it to strangers when i want a family photo--people are so intimidated by my camera and they often take it out-of-focus), which is amazing b/c i've never had the desire before (I cannot STAND the lag-time with those cameras and i don't take pics with an LCD screen). Anyhow, I could use some help--please?????

I wish I knew the answer, but I would DEFINITELY take your camera in to a Canon specialist with copies of the pictures it takes. They can do adjustments to the camera and also, I have found with my Rebel that it shoots with a grey cast - especially with the on board flash. I actually wrote an action for Photoshop that corrects the grey cast and just run it on the pictures that need it.

You spent way too much on that camera to have you wanting a point and shoot instead. Bring it in - I'm sure they will be able to do something!!!

Just replying to see if you got the issue figured out. I was going to buy a 40D, so close that I bought the 40D book (more in depth than the user manual), a Slingshot 200, CF. Backed out because of the cost and that I found a 10D for $80 on craigslist.
If your having the issue still I have some suggestions or can look it up and see what my book says.
